Frequently Asked Questions

Where do you shoot?
At the Cavanbah Centre Sportsgrounds (Herb Elliot Fields to the north-east of the complex).

How much does it cost?
Casual rates for Saturday is $5. Wednesday evenings are $5 in summer and $7.50 in winter as we require the field lights in winter.
Membership costs can be found here.

When do you shoot?
The club shoots every Saturday morning (9 to 11 am) and Wednesday afternoon/evenings (5 to 7 pm) – weather permitting.

What happens during wet weather?
The grounds will not be open if Council decides they are too wet. The wet weather hotline is 02 6626 7111 for the latest updates on Byron Shire sports fields. We also put a message up on the Club’s Facebook page if archery is cancelled.

Is there a minimum age for to shoot with the Byron Shire Archers?
Yes, at BSAC we have a minimum age policy of 8 years old. We find children under this age lack the strength and mental concentration to draw and shoot a bow continually. Children under the age of 10 will need to undergo a shooting assessment prior to membership being granted. Children under 16 require supervision by parents or guardian.

I have never shot before, or am new to archery. Can I turn up anytime and shoot or get instruction?
No, We hold regular beginners courses throughout the year. Information for these events can be found HERE.
*Please Note* We generally do not cater for new archers outside of these events. If none of these dates are suitable, email archery@bsac.com.au and an alternative may be found, but is not guaranteed.

Do I need to be a member of BSAC to shoot at the club?
Yes, you need to be a full shooting member of BSAC to shoot at the club. Or at least a member of another Archery Australia Registered Club. You will need to show proof of membership before shooting.

Can I hire equipment at BSAC?
Yes, we have a number of beginner bows available for hire. Equipment hire is on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved. We encourage all members to purchase equipment indiviually suited to their needs from a reputable archery shop. Avoid purchasing online without first speaking about your choices with a club instrcutor.

Where can I buy archery products locally?
Locally, we reccomend Byron Bay Camping and Disposals or North Coast Firearms in Casino. If you want to make your purchase online, ensure the items you are buying are correct for you. Avoid going for equipment because it is a bargain or looks cool. You can easily waste $$$$ purchasing the wrong equipment. If unsure, ask one of the clubs instructors.

I’ve completed the Beginners Course, whats next?
If you have successfully completed the Beginners Course with BSAC, you will be invited to join the Byron Shire Archers as a full shooting member. As a full shooting member you are eligble to shoot at any Archery Australia accredited club in Australia, as well as compete in local, interstate and national tournaments. You are also entitled to ongoing instruction and coaching from any of the club instructors.

I’m not interested in competitive target archery? Can I still be a full shooting member of Byron Shire Archery Club?
Most definitely, We make a point of not forcing anyone to compete until they are full and ready. There are plenty of targets to wheel to any distance you feel like shooting for as long as you like.
